This Year's Theme: Reactivation / Rediscovery

The UK and Ireland face a gruelling cost of living crisis which is eroding disposable income and consumer confidence. This is happening hot on the heels of months of tough trading conditions in response to the pandemic meaning business resilience is already low. At the 2023 Summer School, 'Reactivation / Rediscovery' we will assess the damage done, and then look at what the place management industry can do to inject new life into high streets, exploring everything from supporting existing businesses, nurturing new businesses, events, regeneration and the creative use of property.

PARALLEL WORKSHOPS

We have six fantastic workshops on day 1 of Summer School. This means three parallel sessions across two 50 minute sessions. Here is a short description of each so you can choose the best for you.

First Parallel Sessions

Competitive Socialising – Beyond Axe Throwing and Indoor Golf (The Alexandra Room) Jeremy Rucker, Founder and CEO, City Dressing

As Debenhams becomes Boom Battle Bar or Dinosaur Golf what is the future of large format retail? Join Jeremy and his crystal ball to look at the future of Competitive Socialising and help predict what the next incarnation will be when Axe Throwing and Computer Darts loses its appeal. One of the main questions posed in the workshop will be how to broaden the demographic appeal of Competitive Socialising. After a short look at some case studies you will be asked to play the Competitive Socialising Game and invent your own games. No axes required.

Has AI Got News For You? (The Tudor Room) Hosted by Loqiva with Marcus Chidgey (Co-Founder & CEO, Loqiva)

Join us for an interactive quiz to see how much you know about the technology influencing the success of your town centre. Learn about what’s next - where does machine learning and AI fit in? Hear about the latest future-thinking projects from around the world, and discover what you could be doing to make your place smarter today with a Loqiva case study.

Lights! Camera! Engagement!: Discover The Driving Forces Behind Social and Video Content Success (The Charnwood Room) Hosted by Toolbox Marketing with Ben Hammond (Growth & Performance Manager, Toolbox Marketing)

Consumers are glued to their phones, social media evolves daily, and TikTok is taking the world by storm. But how do you stand out among the noise on social media? From standard posts on Facebook and Instagram, to curating videos, this workshop will cover the fundamentals behind successful content. Harness what you learn here to become unforgettable.

Second Parallel Sessions

High Street Rental Auctions: Needs Must or a Step Too Far? (The Alexandra Room) Hosted by The Vacant Shops Academy with Iain Nicholson MIPM (Founder of The Vacant Shops Academy)

Controversially, the Department for Levelling Up has announced that local authorities in England will be given the power to auction long-term vacant units to the highest bidder against the will of the property owners. This has divided opinion. This policy is out for consultation. Delegates who attend will be given the opportunity to learn the key issues and have their say with Iain Nicholson MIPM, Strategic Development Lead of the Institute of Place Management and Founder of The Vacant Shops Academy.

How Can a Local Currency Support Community Wealth Building During a Cost of Living Crisis? (The Tudor Room) Hosted by Miconex with Leigh Brown (Chief Operating Officer, Miconex), Helen Hames (Marketing and Commercial Manager, Cambridge BID), Noelle MacAloon (BID Manager, Enniskillen BID), and Colin Munro (Founder, Miconex).

Over 15 Million pounds last year was retained in local communities and businesses through local currencies. In this workshop we will explore how a local currency can support local residents and businesses and provide funds to those who need them with dignity. We will hear from place managers across the UK whose local currency has helped to distribute funds from the Public, Private and 3rd Sector and how they built those relationships with key stakeholders and the impact this has had on their High Streets.

How to Build a Digital Community in your Place (The Charnwood Room) Hosted by LoyalFree with Sophie Hainsworth (Commercial Director, LoyalFree) and Henry Jinman (Managing Director, LoyalFree)

What is a digital community, why are they important and how can you build one in your place? Join LoyalFree (with 7+ years industry experience) to explore these questions together and understand how digital communities can help to create meaningful connections between people and places.
